Rugby report - week 2

Last weekend the first XI rugby team played one of the most anticipated matches of the year, at home against Clifton College, who last year saw to the first team’s darkest day. During training in the week leading up to the match there was a certain buzz in and around the squad, everybody had just one goal, which was perfection for Clifton.

The training before the match was calm and composed. Receiving the kick-off, Bryanston got to work, ruthlessly attacking the Clifton defence. After a knock-on and a kick down field, Clifton found themselves in the Bryanston twenty. After a good 10 phases of attacking Bryanston’s sturdy defence, Clifton managed to sneak in a try in the corner, but missed the conversion attempt. Bryanston quickly reacted with a strong kick-off from Johnny P and with a strong chase and quick thinking, it put them into touch, which soon saw Bryanston on their five-metre line. A strong maul was created, which helped Bryanston make their way to just inches away from the try line and, after the forwards attacked their defence, Simon stormed through to score Bryanston’s first try. Unconverted, Bryanston set up to receive and started to make their way back down the field and, after some great attacking plays from the backs and some awesome territory kicks from Ellis B and Johnny P, they were soon back down in their twenty two. After an expert line-out, the ball was shipped out into the middle of the field, drawing the Clifton players away from the blind side, only to see Ellis send the ball back and, with an awesome pickup and offload from Jasper W, Cam was able to score in the corner. With Johnny's precision place kicking, Bryanston were 12-5 up with 15 minutes until half-time. With five minutes to go, Johnny pulled out a drop-kick, comparable to the likes of Johnny Wilkinson. Sadly, however, Clifton managed to scavenge another try just before half-time, to see the result 15-12.

The second half saw Clifton convert a penalty to draw the game, only for Bryanston to return back down the field with some awesome set moves to see Frankie break through and score under the posts. After some tough defence from Bryanston, some unexpected moves from twinkle toes Harry M and some expert attacking from both sides, Clifton scored from set play off a scrum. They then scored again 10 minutes later and Bryanston became the chasers. Sadly, even after some awesome attacking from brothers Sam and Simon, an awesome run from Jasper W, who levelled a poor Clifton defender, and a cheeky little dink from Ellis to Johnny, Bryanston were not able to level the score.

The final score was 22-29 to Clifton College. Bryanston will take on lots of positives from the match, which they will apply in training this week in the lead up to Downside.
